Montevideo Drivers Education

Classes won't be available again until the Summer of 2023. Look in our Feb-April brochure to see when online registrations opens for Montevideo students. 

4 Basic Steps for Drivers Ed:
1) Take 30 hours of classroom instruction, receive blue card
2) Once you are 15, you can take the knowledge/permit test. You need an appointment to do this now.  After passing the actual exam, make sure you go and fill out the application for the permit/pay the fee (Willmar site, this is in a different building/location than where you take the actual test).

What to expect for your knowledge test:  

Minnesotans will need to book appointments online at DVS exam stations will not accept walk-ins for class D knowledge tests; an appointment will be required.  ***Update as of 1/25/22, Montevideo location is available again the 1, 3, 5th Wednesdays of each month from 10AM-11AM, appointment still required by going to the web address listed above or calling 651-284-1234. 


To schedule an appointment:

·         Go to   or call 651-284-1000

·         Select Schedule or Reschedule an Exam.

·         Follow the prompts.


Anyone who cannot keep an appointment should cancel their appointment online at with as much notice as possible so that appointment can be opened up for someone else.


Come prepared

·         Bring required documents.

·         Know your social security number.

·         Bring check, cash or money order to pay the instruction permit fee and the retesting fee, if applicable.

o    There is a $10 test fee for third or subsequent knowledge tests after failing the first two.

·         If you are younger than 18:

o    You must be at least 15 years old.

o   Bring your certificate of enrollment (blue card) proving that you completed classroom instruction and are signed up for behind-the-wheel instruction, or bring your certificate of enrollment (pink card) proving that you are currently enrolled in a concurrent driver education course and have completed the first 15 classroom hours of the curriculum.

o   A parent, court-appointed guardian, county-appointed foster parent or the director of the transitional living program you reside in will need to come with to sign and approve your application.

o    If completed, bring the supplemental parental curriculum completion certificate.

3) Once you have your permit and have practiced with your parents a few hours (Need to log 50 hours total of driving time with parent), please call Community Education at 320-269-5026 to set up your Behind-The-Wheel (BTW) appointment, 1 hour at a time, *6 hours total; schedule your 6th BTW appointment once you have your driving test scheduled, receive a white card needed to take your driving test.  (If you don't show for your BTW, it is a $35 fee no matter the reason. Changes to BTW must be done 48 hours in advance and by talking to a person in the office, not leaving a message. )  **Please plan on spreading these 6 appointments out over time. It is not meant to try and do them all in a two week period as our instructors schedules can't accommodate this.
